Goodreads Summary
milk and honey is a collection of poetry and prose about survival. It is about the experience of violence, abuse, love, loss, and femininity. It is split into four chapters, and each chapter serves a different purpose, deals with a different pain, heals a different heartache. milk and honey takes readers through a journey of the most bitter moments in life and finds sweetness in them because there is sweetness everywhere if you are just willing to look.

Poetry is not something I regularly read, but this was a good introduction into the genre for me. I was intrigued the moment I saw the cover of this book (doing a classic "judge a book by its cover" here) and finally got round to reading it. This book is filled with poems, short and longer ones, linked to the bitterness and sweetness of life. There were quite a few bittersweet ones - the ones I enjoy the most.

I loved every single poem in this book. Rupi Kaur has a way with words that is beautiful and gentle. All the poems are moving and unflinching, not sugar-coating anything. Each part is a slightly different emotion, so I was pulled through a journey of sadness, love, heartbreak and hope. Some poems are darker and melancholic, others lighter and hopeful. The transition between each part was done smoothly and emotionally, allowing me time to absorb what I just read and think about it. Each part serves a different purpose and has a different mood, but they all work in tandem to produce Milk and Honey, a powerful and inspiring collection of poems. You can just flip to a random page and find an inspirational quote there. My absolute favourite was the last part, when hints of feminism came out. That is what we need more of in life these days!

Like I said, I normally don't read poetry that often, mainly because I'm afraid it will be a waste of time and space on my bookshelf, but Milk and Honey proved me wrong! It is so worth reading and I think her poems will stick with me for a long time. If you haven't yet read this book, but have a couple hours to spare for a read, I strongly recommend this book.

My Chosen Quote
“if you were born with the weakness to fall you were born with the strength to rise”
